What is the Arab Lingua Test?
The Arabic Lingua Test (ALT) is a test to calibrate the fluency of a student’s Arabic language ability, orientated towards whether the language is to be used in study or business, by combined assessment of written and spoken skills. ALT would utilise a broad base of modern teaching research from various fields to instil in students a certain brand of quality in new, contemporary MSA teaching standards.
ALT focuses on ‘international Arabic’, including Arabic from The Middle East and North Africa.
For whom would the test be applicable?
Those who would find the test useful would include the following.
- Undergraduate or postgraduate students.
- Students who require level assessment for an Arabic study program.
- Prospective applicants wishing to join a professional organisation in an Arabic speaking country.
- Candidates applying for selection for fellowships, scholarships or other training related to the Arabic language.
How is ALT set up?
ALT is available in two categories.
- Academic Module for those who wish to enrol in universities and other higher education programs.
- General Training Module for those who want to undertake further training, have professional needs or for immigration requirements.
How long is the test qualification valid for?
The test is valid for 2 years. You can undertake ALT as many times as you like.
What is the test format?
ALT designed to cover all four Arabic language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking. It is divided into four parts.
- Oral comprehension (40 – 60 min), which deals with social issues, education subjects or vocational training.
- Reading (60 min). The texts are extracts from magazines, books and newspapers. The difficulty increases gradually.
- Written expression (60 min). Two writing tests.
- Oral expression (20 min). Individual interview with an examiner.
How is the test scored?
The score is calculated using values between 1 (beginner) to 9 (expert). Your level is reported on a results sheet with your photo and stating your individual scores in listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Where is the examination centre in Cairo?
All testing will be undertaken at the Daad Academy, Cairo.
How much does ALT cost?
The price for both modules is 225.00 US$ including a VAT rate of 13%.
How are the results obtained?
The results are printed as on an official report form 13 days after the date of the review.
